Bob Hartley or...

Bob Hartley or Give a Guy his First Chance?

Let’s take a closer look at Bob Hartley as he is being rumored to be a coaching candidate for the Flames.

Obviously, we all know him for his success with the Colorado Avalanche leading them to a Stanley Cup in 2001. He later went on to coach the Atlanta Thrashers making the playoffs just once in over four seasons behind the bench.

Some may be confused as to why Bob’s name is coming up. He is currently coaching Switzerland but hold close ties to Jay Feaster as he is the Godfather to Feaster’s son. Hartley also won a Calder trophy with the Hershey Bears while Jay was the president. Clearly, they have had a long track together and I am sure Bob will get an interview for the job.

Now one can argue if the Flames need another veteran defensive minded coach to coach this team. I tend to agree with the people who oppose this move. I am not against Hartley and I believe he is a great coach, yet I do not believe he is the answer for this club. I would prefer a younger guy with a fresh outlook. Three names come to mind. First, Troy Ward, coach of the Abbotsford Heat, although he may be too inexperienced to tackle this veteran club. Feaster has stated that Troy will be interviewed. Secondly, how about Bob Boughner? Has had success at the OHL level and had a brief stint in the NHL as an assistant coach. Boughner is familiar with Calgary as he was the captain here back in his playing days. And my last wild card pick is Ray Bennett, current assistant coach in St. Louis. An Alberta guy who has been an assistant coach in the NHL since 1999, both with the Blues and Kings. It might be time to see what he can do coaching his own team.

Only time will tell but early on Hartley seems to have one shoe in just based on previous history with Jay Feaster. We have seen Feaster turn to what he knows (Modin) with that said perhaps Darryl Sydor gets an interview too.

Flames Jambalaya is in no way, shape or form associated with the Calgary Flames Hockey Club or the AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat. This is a fans blog for fans. We just happen to love the Flames, so we write about it.
