CALGARY AND EDMONTON MAKE A NHL TRADE

Flames and Oilers make a trade, again

Flames acquire Ladislav Smid & Olivier Roy from the Oilers for Roman Horak & Laurent Brossoit.

Flames acquire the 27 year old physical left handed defenseman who has three more years at 3.5 million per season remaining on his contract. Smid comes over leading the Oilers in blocked shots and hits, not a guy who is offensive but he comes to play every night. Feaster stated he and management felt Smid competes hard and holds himself at a high regard. Smid adds a big body on the blue line which the Flames needed; regardless if they were in a rebuild or not. Smid is a player in his prime and will help the Flames for years to come. Unless the Flames flip him at the deadline…could happen.

The Calgary Flames also acquire Olivier Roy a fifth round pick who has been bouncing around the AHL and ECHL. Roy is a very athletic goaltender but lacks size. Roy is believed to need new scenery and could flourish, I however have my doubts. The Flames are very high on Jon Gillies which allowed a good prospect in Laurent Brossoit to be moved to the rival Oilers.

Roman Horak who came over in the Tim Erixon to New York trade was expendable with the emergence of Knight and Jooris. Horak is a smart two way player. But again lacks size and when Brian Burke came into the organization he stated the Calgary Flames will get bigger. With the additions of Colborne and Smid, the Flames seem committed to adding size, and are doing it quickly.

All in all it is strange to see these two teams complete a trade. But it makes sense for both teams as the Oilers made cap room to sign Bryzgalov to a contract. This trade smells desperate from Edmonton, as Feaster admitted the trade was close to being completed last week.

I do like that the Flames management are not sitting idle, always looking to improve the team without acquiring players past their prime.  In my opinion that is what Edmonton did wrong during their first couple years into their rebuild. We will see if Feaster and co learned from that and keep up the smart transactions.

I bet Jiri Hudler who has been having a very good season is happy to see his country mate join his team.

Analyzing the Oilers/Flames Deal

The Flames desperately needed a dman to play in their own zone.   They have acquired Ladislav Smid, along with prospect goalie Olivier Roy.  Roman Horak and goalie Laurent Brossoit are going to the OilersRoman Horak never quite made it here.  He was always close, but just never quite there.  As for Brossoit, I think it was just a numbers game.

Smid is the stay-home dman the Flames so desperately need.  He will help the Flames in their own zone. Smid may not be spectacular, but he fills a need.  I really do not know much about Roy, except that he is an Oiler prospect.

What I am wondering is what does this do to Butler?  Let's face facts; Butler has struggled this season.  I would bet this puts him on notice. It also makes me wonder what happens when Gio comes back. And that means Smith and O'Brien may also be affected by this deal.

I wonder if this deal means something else is up.  With all their injuries, the Flames need a forward.  They are busy on the phones, but a partner may be hard to find.

Flames Jambalaya is in no way, shape or form associated with the Calgary Flames Hockey Club or the AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat. This is a fans blog for fans. We just happen to love the Flames, so we write about it.
